To
make a simple Pamphlet Journal:
Finished
size approximately 7”x7”
Supplies:
·
A
full sheet (22”x 30”) of 90-140lb watercolor or printmaking paper.
·
A
metal ruler or straight edge for measurements and tearing the paper
·
A
bone folder or spoon to make the folds crisp
·
Awl
·
Waxed
or heavy thread for binding
·
Needle/
Scissors
1.
Make a mark at 1/3rd of the paper at the
narrow edge (22”), crease.
2.
Fold remaining paper into the first crease so you end up
with 2 folds.
3.
Unfold and tear into 3 sections along crease.
4.
Fold each of the 3 sections in half, crease and tear at
fold.
5.
Fold each of these sections in half. You will end up with 6
folios.
6.
Nest the papers together at the fold to make a signature.
7.
Use an awl to punch 3 small holes in the center crease,
about 1.5” from top and bottom and one center.
8.
Measure out thread 3x the length of the book and cut.
9. Thread
needle and poke the needle into the center hole from the outside of the
pamphlet, leaving about a 4” tail of thread.
10. Next,
from the inside, poke the needle into either of the end holes and gently pull
the thread tight.
11. Next,
on the outside of the book, skip over the center hole, which has the tail
coming out of it, and poke the needle into the remaining hole. Gently pull the
thread tight.
12. Finally
on the inside of the book, poke the needle back into the center hole, making
sure that the needle comes out on the opposite side of the long stitch tail.
13. Tie
the tail and the thread together in a double knot close to the hole.
